System Definition U40
The U40 system size defines the engineered interface between tooth and adapter within the heavy-duty application range.
Typical application range:
Crawler and wheeled excavators Approx. in the 25–35 tonne class with cutting edge thicknesses of 40 mm, 45 mm or 50 mm.
Note:
Machine class serves as a reference value only and is not an identification criterion. The decisive factor is the stamped system size “U40” on the existing component.
The locking mechanism is integrated into the tooth. Separate locking pins or hammer-retained systems are not required.
Cutting Edge Logic U40 (40 / 45 / 50 mm)
In heavy-duty applications, bucket lips are reinforced.
U40 adapters are typically designed for the following cutting edge thicknesses:
40 mm cutting edge
45 mm cutting edge
50 mm cutting edge
In addition to the system size, cutting edge thickness is the key selection criterion when choosing the correct adapter.
Tooth Geometries within the U40 System
Depending on ground conditions and wear requirements, the following geometries are available:
U40S – standard
U40C – chisel
U40P – pick
U40T – twin
HB variants (Heavy Back) with reinforced rear wear volume:
U40SHB
U40PHB
U40CHB
U40THB
Heavy and abrasion-oriented variants:
U40H
U40AP
U40APHB
Note:
The U40A and U40AP geometries are loader tooth variants designed for wheel loader applications.
Adapters and Protection Components U40
The U40 system includes structurally reinforced adapters and protection parts designed to withstand high loads.
Available components include:
Weld-on adapters
Bolt-on adapters
Corner adapters left / right
Side and flank protection components
In heavy-duty environments, correctly dimensioned corner and flank protection significantly increases adapter service life.
Position within the Ultralok® System Hierarchy
The U40 size is positioned between two adjacent system classes:
U35 – typical range 20–25 tonnes
U40 – typical range 25–35 tonnes
U45 – typical range 35–45 tonnes
The distinction is not determined by excavator weight alone but by the actual stamped system size on the component.

Technical Identification Before Ordering
Before placing an order, verify:
Is “U40” clearly stamped on the existing tooth or adapter?
What is the cutting edge thickness (40 mm / 45 mm / 50 mm)?
Which adapter type is installed (weld-on, bolt-on, corner L/R)?
Which tooth geometry matches the specific application?
If uncertain, LIS® technical support will assist with system identification.
