Complete Track Groups for Excavators and Crawler Undercarriages
Complete track groups are pre-assembled undercarriage assemblies consisting of a track chain with mounted track shoes. They are also referred to as excavator chains, steel track chains, track groups or complete track chain assemblies.
- Assembly: track chain with mounted track shoes
- Configurations: single grouser, double grouser, triple grouser track shoes or selected rubber pad versions
- Selection: verify link count, chain pitch, shoe width and grouser profile

What Are Complete Track Groups?
A complete track group consists of a track chain and the corresponding track shoes. This pre-assembled unit forms the connection between the crawler undercarriage and the ground.
Complete track groups are used on excavators, crawler excavators, crawler machines, dozers, asphalt pavers and specialist equipment. The correct configuration depends on machine model, undercarriage version and technical undercarriage data.
Track Chain or Complete Track Group?
A track chain is the undercarriage chain without mounted track shoes. A complete track group includes the track chain and the track shoes as a mounted assembly.
If only the chain assembly needs replacement, a track chain is relevant. If track chain and track shoes are replaced together, a complete track group is required.
Track Group and Complete Track Chain Assembly
In international undercarriage terminology, complete assemblies are commonly referred to as Track Groups, Complete Track Groups or Track Chain Assemblies with Track Shoes.
These terms describe a pre-assembled unit consisting of a track chain and track shoes. In practical purchasing language, the same product group may also be referred to as a complete excavator chain, steel track chain or complete undercarriage chain.
Track Shoe Configuration: Single, Double or Triple Grouser
The installed track shoe design has a major influence on traction, machine stability, turning resistance and ground contact behaviour.
Single grouser track shoes are mainly used on dozers and applications requiring high traction. Double grouser track shoes combine traction and manoeuvrability. Triple grouser track shoes are commonly used on excavators where smooth operation, stability and reduced turning resistance are important.
Selected complete track groups are configured with rubber pads or prepared for rubber pad applications. Related categories include Track Shoes, Single Grouser Track Shoes, Double Grouser Track Shoes, Triple Grouser Track Shoes and Rubber Pads.
Link Count, Chain Pitch and Track Shoe Width
Correct selection of a complete track group requires verification of link count, chain pitch, track shoe width, shoe thickness, grouser profile and the existing undercarriage configuration.
Even minor differences in pitch, link count, shoe dimensions or bolt pattern can prevent compatibility with the existing undercarriage.
Complete Track Groups within the Undercarriage System
A complete track group operates as a central assembly within the crawler undercarriage. The sprocket engages the chain, the idler redirects the chain assembly and the track adjuster maintains the required chain tension.
Track rollers carry the machine on the chain, while carrier rollers guide the upper chain run. If the undercarriage is heavily worn, the complete system should be evaluated because worn components can increase load on the new track group.
How Is the Correct Complete Track Group Identified?
For correct identification of a complete track group, machine manufacturer, model, serial number, chain pitch, link count, track shoe width and track shoe configuration should be verified.
The LIS® Undercarriage Finder helps identify suitable undercarriage parts based on manufacturer, model, machine version and serial number. Access is available through a free LIS® customer account.
