Rain Caps for Construction Equipment
Rain caps for construction equipment are mechanical protection components for open or vertical air intake pipes, preventing the ingress of rainwater, debris and foreign objects into the intake system when the engine is not running.
Incorrect diameter, design or configuration leads to reduced airflow, increased intake restriction or insufficient protection of the intake system.

Function at the Air Intake
Rain caps are mounted directly on the intake pipe and operate purely mechanically. During operation, the cap opens due to airflow; when the system is shut down, it closes by its own weight.
This prevents uncontrolled entry of water and coarse particles at the intake point, especially in vertically oriented intake systems exposed to outdoor conditions.
Typical Applications
- Construction and off-highway equipment
- Agricultural and forestry machinery
- Stationary engines and generator sets
- Air intake systems with vertical intake pipes
Designs, Materials and Diameter Selection
Rain caps are available in various sizes and material configurations. This category primarily includes polypropylene (PP) designs, as well as metal versions for demanding environments.
Selection is primarily based on connection diameter and design geometry. Typical sizes range from approx. 42 mm up to over 300 mm, covering small to high-volume intake systems.
In addition to diameter, the effective opening area of the rain cap is critical. It must match the required airflow of the intake system to avoid additional intake restriction.
Position within the Intake System
Rain caps are part of the intake line and provide protection directly at the air entry point.
They prevent the direct ingress of water and coarse contamination before the air reaches downstream air filter systems and installed air filter elements.
System Integration
Within the intake system, rain caps are often combined with pre-cleaners (cyclones), which reduce dust load before primary filtration.
air intake componentsensure proper airflow routing between intake, accessories and filter housing and directly influence system airflow performance.
Selection and Identification
Selection is based on reference number, connection diameter, design and installation conditions. Matching the existing intake geometry and required airflow is essential.
Visually similar designs with different diameters are a common source of incorrect selection.
