What Are Double Grouser Track Shoes?

Double Grouser Track Shoes are steel track shoes featuring two parallel grousers. They are mounted to the track chain assembly and form the contact surface between the undercarriage and the ground.

The double grouser design provides a technical balance between traction, stability, ride quality and maneuverability. It is commonly used on track loaders, heavy excavators and other crawler machines operating in demanding conditions.

When Are Double Grouser Track Shoes Used?

Double Grouser Track Shoes are typically selected when a machine requires both strong traction and stable, controlled steering performance. Typical applications include earthmoving, material handling, infrastructure projects, demolition work and heavy construction operations.

Depending on machine size and operating conditions, different widths, chain pitches and plate thicknesses are used. The LIS® range includes compact Double Grouser Track Shoes as well as heavy-duty versions for large excavators and crawler equipment.

Difference Between Single, Double and Triple Grouser Track Shoes

  • Single Grouser Track Shoes: high ground penetration and maximum traction for bulldozers, crawler dozers and applications requiring high drawbar pull.
  • Double Grouser Track Shoes: balanced combination of traction, stability and maneuverability for excavators, track loaders and heavy crawler machines.
  • Triple Grouser Track Shoes: reduced ground penetration, smoother travel and improved maneuverability for many excavator applications.

How to Select the Correct Width, Chain Pitch and Mounting Dimensions

Track shoe width alone is not sufficient for proper identification. Chain pitch, plate thickness, bolt pattern and mounting dimensions must match the existing track chain assembly.

Wider track shoes increase ground contact area and may reduce ground pressure on soft terrain. However, excessively wide shoes can increase loads on chains, pins, bushings and other undercarriage components depending on the machine and application.

Why Are There Multiple Double Grouser Track Shoes with Similar Widths?

Several Double Grouser Track Shoes may have identical or similar widths while remaining technically different. Variations can result from chain pitch, plate thickness, bolt pattern, mounting dimensions, track chain design or machine compatibility requirements.

For this reason, technical drawings, mounting dimensions and existing undercarriage specifications should always be verified before ordering.

Double Grouser Track Shoes for Heavy Excavators and Large Crawler Machines

Heavy excavators and large crawler machines often use wider Double Grouser Track Shoes with larger chain pitches and increased plate thicknesses. These configurations are designed for high machine weights, demanding ground conditions and stable load distribution.

The correct configuration always depends on the machine model, undercarriage design, track chain assembly and operating environment.

When Should Double Grouser Track Shoes Be Replaced?

Double Grouser Track Shoes should be inspected when grousers become heavily worn, bolt holes are elongated, shoes become loose, bent or cracked. Worn track shoes can negatively affect traction, stability and overall undercarriage performance.

Timely replacement helps reduce the risk of additional wear to track chains, bolts, nuts and other undercarriage components.
