LIS® Replacement Parts for the CAT® J400 Tooth System

The heavy-duty system for 35- to 45-ton excavators and heavy wheel loaders.
The J400 system marks the definitive transition from universal standard systems to true heavy-duty applications. Bucket teeth and adapters are part of the Ground Engaging Tools (GET).

LIS® carries precisely fitting J400 components (side-pin) for extreme breakout forces in quarrying, heavy earthmoving, and demolition.

  • Machine Class: Heavy excavators and wheel loaders (approx. 35–45 t, e.g., CAT 336, 340, 345, 972, 980)
  • Locking Mechanism: Horizontal locking (side-pin) with a massive Ø 23 mm pin
  • Warranty: Lifetime breakage warranty* on LIS® teeth and adapters

System Differentiation: The J400 Size

The J400 size is structurally designed to absorb high shock loads and continuous stress in rock where smaller systems fail. It features massive adapter geometries and large-dimensioned retaining rings.

Tooth tips, adapters, and locking parts are only compatible within the J400 size.

Technical Identification: Is it really J400?

Since tooth loss in the 40-ton class can have fatal consequences, the system must be determined exactly. Use these reference values for identification on the old part:

  • 1. Typical J400 Part Numbers (Cast Numbers):
Common reference numbers for J400 tooth points end in "...402" (e.g., the standard tooth 7T-3402 or the rock tooth 7T-3402RC).
  • 2. Adapter Nose Dimension (Inch Rule):
As a rough technical guide, the thickness of the adapter nose for the J400 size is exactly 4.0 inches (approx. 102 mm).
  • 3. Dimensions of J400 Locking Elements:
The J400 locking pin (e.g., reference number 7T-3408) has a diameter of Ø approx. 23.0 mm and a massive length of approx. 119.0 mm. The corresponding retainer measures approx. 38.0 mm in outer diameter.

Workshop Hint: Structural Limits of J350 vs. J400

A frequent error in practice is the attempt to "upgrade" an existing J350 system for hard rock applications via more massive tooth shapes. The consequences are almost always deformed locking pins, worn-out adapters, or complete tooth loss, as the leverage forces overload the pin. The J400 system solves this problem systemically through stronger pins (23 mm instead of 19 mm) and a more robust adapter base, not just via the tooth.

Tooth Shapes and Adapters for the Heaviest Applications

The J400 tooth system offers maximum wear reserves for high abrasion and impact. LIS® carries the following profiles:

To safely transfer the tremendous forces to the bucket, LIS® carries heavy-duty two-strap weld-on adapters for thick cutting edges on excavator buckets, as well as massive flush-mount or bolt-on adapters for loader buckets in the J400 segment.

System Comparison: Alternatives to the J-System

Besides the CAT J-Series, other high-performance tooth systems are used in the heavy-duty sector. If your machine is not equipped with the J400 side-pin locking mechanism, you will find these established alternatives at LIS®:

What you should check before ordering

To avoid incorrect orders and machine downtime, please verify the following points:

  • Is the stamp "J400" or a known part number (e.g., 7T-3402) legible on the old part?
  • Is the adapter nose approx. 102 mm (4.0 inches) thick?
  • Does the locking pin have a diameter of Ø approx. 23 mm (Length approx. 119 mm)?
  • Have you added completely new locking elements (pin & retainer) to your cart?

If you are unsure, the LIS® technical sales team will be happy to assist you at any time.
