System Differentiation: The J550 Size

The J550 size is used exactly where locking elements or adapters of the smaller J460 class are disproportionately stressed in hard rock handling and a higher system reserve is required. 

Tooth tips, adapters, and locking parts are only compatible within the J550 size.

Technical Identification: Is it really J550?

In mass excavation, unambiguous system identification is essential. Use these reference values on the old part:

  • 1. Typical J550 Part Numbers (Cast Numbers):
    Common reference numbers for J550 tooth points end in "...552" (e.g., the standard tooth 9W-8552 or the rock tooth 9W-8552RC).
  • 2. Adapter Nose Dimension (Inch Rule):
    As a rough technical guide, the thickness of the adapter nose for the J550 size is approx. 5.5 inches (approx. 140 mm).
  • 3. Dimensions of J550 Locking Elements:
    The J550 locking pin (reference number 6Y-8558) has a diameter of Ø approx. 25.0 mm and an enormous length of approx. 163.0 mm. The corresponding retainer (8E-5559) measures approx. 52.0 mm in outer diameter.

Workshop Hint: Danger to life due to material fatigue

In the J550 load range, locking pins and retaining rings are extremely function-critical wear parts. In practice, reused retainers lead to reduced locking due to the loss of tension. The consequences are massive secondary damage to the adapter or sudden tooth loss during operation. Strict workshop rule: Consistently and systematically replace locking elements with every tooth change – especially if there is visible deformation or an unclear history of the old part.
