CAT® J-Series tooth system: design and size logic

The CAT® J-Series tooth system is a side-locking system for ground engaging tools on excavator buckets, wheel loader buckets and other wear-intensive attachments. The system family includes tooth tips or bucket teeth, tooth adapters or tooth holders, as well as lock pins and retainers.

The tooth tip is pushed onto the matching adapter nose and secured from the side with a lock pin and retainer. The decisive factor is not the machine weight alone, but the actual system size on the existing component, the reference number, the adapter geometry and the locking configuration.

The subcategories lead directly to the individual CAT® J-Series sizes from J200 to J800. Ripper and shank tooth components for CAT® D8, D9, D10 and D11 applications are listed as a separate special application because they do not follow the standard bucket tooth and adapter logic of the J200–J800 size categories.

Which CAT-J size do I need?

The correct CAT-J size is identified by the marking on the existing part, a confirmed reference number, the existing tooth interface and the locking configuration. Tooth tip, adapter and locking parts can only be combined within the matching system size.

Bucket teeth, tooth tips and tooth profiles

Depending on application and market usage, tooth tips are also referred to as bucket teeth, excavator teeth or loader teeth. For technical selection, the wording alone is not sufficient; the relevant factors are CAT® J-Series size, reference number, tooth profile and the existing adapter interface.

• Penetration / Sharp / Spike: for compacted or hard-to-penetrate materials
• Double Spike / Twin Tiger: for fractured or abrasive materials with a narrow penetration profile
• Rock Chisel / rock tooth / chisel profile: for rocky and abrasive operating conditions
• Heavy Duty / Heavy Abrasion: for applications requiring increased wear volume in abrasive material
• Wide / Paddle: for applications requiring a wider cutting or contact surface

Tooth adapters, tooth holders and locking parts

Tooth adapters and tooth holders form the interface between the bucket lip or base edge and the tooth tip. Depending on bucket, loader bucket and cutting edge design, weld-on adapters, two strap adapters, bottom strap designs, flush-mounted adapters or special adapters may be used.

For adapters, the CAT® J-Series size, lip thickness, bevel angle, existing weld-on interface and wear condition of the adapter interface must be checked. Play between tooth tip and adapter interface can indicate wear, an incorrect combination or damaged locking parts.

Lock pins and retainers secure the tooth tip laterally on the adapter. When replacing a tooth, pin, retainer and adapter interface should be checked for damage, deformation and sufficient holding function.

Workshop notes for identification

For reliable replacement part selection, existing components should be cleaned before ordering and checked for readable markings. Cast numbers, reference numbers, system markings and the position of the locking hole support identification. If several details differ, the combination of reference number, system size, adapter interface and locking parts is decisive.

A side-mounted horizontal locking system indicates the CAT® J-Series tooth system. If the existing part does not have a side-pin locking configuration, the tooth system should be checked before ordering.

Distinction from other tooth systems

The CAT® J-Series tooth system is identified by side locking with lock pin and retainer. Other tooth systems use different locking methods, adapter geometries or integrated locking concepts. Check before ordering

• Is the exact CAT® J-Series size known?
• Is there a confirmed reference number on the tooth, adapter or locking part?
• Does the tooth profile match the material and application?
• Is the existing adapter interface worn or loose?
• Are lock pin and retainer available in the matching size?
• For adapters: Do lip thickness, base edge and bevel angle match?
